Decent gaming computer, but buying from amazon sticks you with factory defaults. It would be easier and probably cheaper just to buy from [...] unless you are like me and live in an area that they dont deliver to.

I ordered my Alienware M15x through the Dell website on 12/3/2009. Delivery occurred on 12/18/2009, which was the original order anticipated build completion date. Nice! The laptop is replacing a home-built custom quad-core Cosmos gaming PC. During the purchase process, I opted for the RAM upgrade to 4GB @ 1333MHz, upgraded the video card to the 260m (and got a $50 Dell promo gift card from this), got the 1080p screen, and upped the hard drive to 320GB. I subscribe to Steve Job's notion that Blu-Ray is a bag of hurt, so I stuck with the DVD/CD slot burner. Performance-wise, the M15x is Sea Biscuit. I've thrown several games at it, from Crysis (silky-smooth at high resolution), WoW, Torchlight, Fallout 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Half-Life 2, Sins of a Solar Empire, and Company of Heroes. All ran flawlessly, at max or near-max settings. The standard Core i7 1.6GHz (2.8GHz turbo) cuts through these applications like nothing I've seen. While I enjoyed overclocking my custom desktop PC, this machine doesn't really need it. It's greased lightning right out of the box. Pros: I liked the price point. I knew I was getting a great machine for the money, and what I spent matches what I received. Weight. This is a desktop replacement, so I expected some heft. I like the fact that this thing has some meat to it. If I wanted a light, take-anywhere laptop, I would have bought a netbook. Alienware effects/polish/workmanship - worth the price of admission. This is a beautiful machine. Dell's service. Anytime a company underpromises and overdelivers, I'm a happy camper. The M15x arrived way ahead of schedule, packaged professionally, and came out of the box ready to roll. My cons are pretty similar to other reviewers: - screen is really reflective, but playing in a darker room mitigates this. - touchpad. I don't know who was driving the boat when they decided on this particular hardware. It's not that bad, but it's not great either. Onscreen movement is pretty herky-jerky, even after software update. Mouse-users won't bother with it. After years of desktop machines and business laptops, this is my first personal laptop, and start-to-finish, it's been a great experience. It's easily replaced my workhorse desktop for all my uses. I will gladly buy Dell/Alienware again down the road. Can't recommend it enough.

One of the downsides right out of the box with these Alienware machine is price. They do have some of the best parts inside of them, but the price that you will pay for the privilege of using them is quite high.

While the price may be high, the specs on the inside of the box are simply amazing. There is nothing better than this 2.8 GHz extreme dual core processor. 4 GB of memory can be put into your machine. This will not only allow it to zip along at unbelievably fast speeds, but it will allow you to use your computer in many different programs. Read the rest of this entry »

Featuring a precision unibody enclosure crafted from a single block of aluminum, the 17-inch MacBook Pro is thinner and lighter than its predecessor as well as stronger and more durable. But Apple didn't stop innovating with the body's design. The MacBook Pro also includes a new high-resolution LED-backlit widescreen with a 1920-by-1200-pixel resolution, a greater color gamut for more vibrant colors, and a 700:1 contrast ratio that makes whites brighter and blacks blacker. It also includes the new glass trackpad that does away with the trackpad button (for larger tracking area) and features Apple's Multi-Touch technology. And the non-removable battery lasts up to 8 hours on a single charge and can be recharged up to 1000 times--compared with only 200 to 300 times for typical notebooks. The 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro (see larger version). Under the hood, the MacBook Pro is powered by a powerful 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (with 6 MB L2 cache and 1066 MHz front-side bus), which runs applications faster and more efficiently as well as helps to reduce power requirements and save on battery life. And the MacBook Pro includes two video processors for ultimate flexibility: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics for great everyday performance and NVIDIA 9600M GT discrete graphics (512 MB of GDDR3 memory) for fast, smooth video--perfect for 3D gaming. Other hardware features include a 500 GB hard drive, 4 GB of installed RAM (which can be upgraded to 8 GB), an 8x combo Superdrive (for burning dual-layer DVDs as well as CDs), built-in Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), FireWire 800 port, Mini DisplayPort video output (for DVI and VGA connections), and an ExpressCard/34 expansion card slot for expansion solutions such as 3G cellular networking. It comes pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system--an operating system custom-designed for the advanced technology inside--and it also comes with the iLife '09 suite of applications, including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes. The Unibody MacBook Pro Design Traditionally notebooks are made from multiple parts. With the MacBook Pro all of those parts with just one part--the breakthrough unibody enclosure. Every MacBook Pro starts its life as a single block of aluminum, which is precisely machined into the basic unibody design. Another pass and the unibody takes shape. Another, and the integrated keyboard emerges. When you pick up a new MacBook Pro, you immediately notice the entire enclosure is thinner and lighter. And it feels strong and durable--perfect for life inside (and outside) your briefcase or backpack. The standard aluminum electro-static trackpad has been replaced with a new glass Multi-Touch trackpad, which provides 40 percent more tracking area than before. Use two fingers to scroll up and down a page. Pinch to zoom in and out. Rotate an image with your fingertips. Swipe with three fingers to flip through your photo libraries. Swipe with four fingers to show your desktop, view all open windows, or switch applications. The entire trackpad surface is also a button, allowing you to both track and click virtually anywhere on the trackpad. And you can easily enable multiple virtual buttons in software, such as right-clicking. The keyboard has also been improved, with the rigid aluminum keyboard webbing cut precisely to hold the keys, which are curved to perfectly fit fingers. And it's illuminated, so when you're in low-light settings, such as airplanes or conference rooms, you can always see what you're typing. Vibrant Display With the high-resolution LED-backlit widescreen display on the 17-inch MacBook Pro, you get desktop-quality color in an Apple notebook for the first time. The moment you open your MacBook Pro, you're greeted instantly by full, corner-to-corner screen brightness. The 1920 x 1200-pixel resolution (133 pixels per inch) means you can view more palettes and windows or watch HD video in its native 1920 x 1080 resolution. Perfect whether you're working in the studio or out in the field, the display offers a 60 percent greater color gamut than previous generations for richer, more vibrant colors and a 700:1 contrast ratio that makes whites brighter and blacks blacker. In addition, the seamless glass enclosure makes the display stronger and more durable. Because it's power efficient and the glass is mercury- and arsenic-free, it's also greener than ever. Long-Lasting Battery The 17-inch MacBook Pro includes a newly engineered lithium-polymer battery that that lasts up to 8 hours on a single charge thanks to advanced chemistry, intelligent monitoring of the system and battery, and Adaptive Charging technology. The battery is built right into the computer, eliminating the space-consuming mechanisms and housings that standard removable batteries require. This non-removable battery also provides a longer battery lifespan of up to 1000 recharges--meaning fewer depleted batteries and less waste, which is better for the environment. Giving it a lifespan of up to 1000 recharges required breakthroughs in battery technology. Apple electro-chemists developed advanced chemistry that maintains the battery's charging capabilities longer than ever. And while most notebooks wear down their batteries by charging them at a constant rate, the 17-inch MacBook Pro takes a different approach. Using an Apple-developed technology called Adaptive Charging, a microchip on the battery constantly communicates with the computer to determine the optimal way to charge its cells, adjusting the current up and down depending on a variety of conditions. Combined, these advancements offer a dramatic improvement in battery lifespan: more than three times the lifespan of typical notebook batteries--up to five years. Off-the-shelf lithium-ion cells come in fixed, cylindrical shapes. The 17-inch MacBook Pro is powered by custom-made, ultrathin lithium-polymer batteries. Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 2.80 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which has a super-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an extra-large 6 MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) The hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. With 6 MB of shared L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle. Video Processing & Output The 17-inch MacBook Pro combines the efficiency of an integrated graphics processor with the desktop-class performance of a discrete graphics processor thanks to the inclusion of both. Out of the box, it runs the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M processor, which provides plenty of performance for everyday use with up to 5 hours of battery life. But when you need turbocharged performance for the most graphically intensive tasks, the discrete NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT processor delivers--such as for demanding 3D games like Quake, Call of Duty, and Spore. And thanks to a new graphics architecture, it's easy to switch between these two processors. The 9400M graphics processor shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory, while the 9600M provides 512 MB of dedicated GDDR3 video memory. The MacBook Pro includes a next generation Mini DisplayPort, which delivers a pure digital signal that can drive up to a 30-inch widescreen display. The Mini DisplayPort is ultra-compact at just 10 percent the size of a full DVI connector, and is compatible with Apple's 24-inch Cinema Display. Adapters are also available for using VGA, DVI/HDMI and Dual-Link DVI displays Hard Drive and Memory The 500 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to USB 2.0. The 4 GB of PC3-8500 DDR3 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1024 MB) has an industry-leading 1066 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 8 GB. Wireless Connectivity The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague. Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight Artfully placed in the glass display is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up to 10 people and provides high-quality audio compression and full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. For video podcasting, you can record a short clip using the iSight camera, then use iWeb to create a video blog entry or post your GarageBand-recorded podcast. Apple engineers removed the majority of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from circuit boards, internal cables, connectors, insulators, adhesives, and more in the MacBook Pro. Because Apple makes both the hardware and the software for the MacBook, they're designed to work together to produce a smarter product that uses less electricity. For instance, to reduce energy consumption, the hard drive spins down automatically when inactive. MacBook Air also decides which processor--CPU or GPU--is best suited to efficiently perform a task. The LED-backlit display in the MacBook Pro is another feature that plays an important part in conserving energy, consuming 30 percent less power than conventional LCD displays. And the display is designed to dim when you enter a darkened room. The MacBook Pro meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR certification. MacBook also meets the latest efficiency requirements of ENERGY STAR Version 5.0 Specification for Computers before its July 2009 effective date. The MacBook Pro has also earned the highest rating of EPEAT Gold. The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, or EPEAT, evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses, and how it's designed and manufactured. Reviews

I recently purchased an Apple MacBook Pro. What a great product. The keyboard is easy to type on and the shortcut keys make it a breeze to get things done quickly. It was very easy to transfer existing files from my Mac Pro (tower) computer to the laptop. I was up and running in no time. The back lit keyboard is nice as is the anti glare screen. I HIGHLY recommend this product!!!! I have always had Apple computers and wouldn't want to use anything but a Mac!!! Shopping on Amazon and comparing prices with the Mac Store, Amazon beat the price significantly!!! It was delivered in a timely fashion!!!

All I have to say is this is a great computer and if you need service Apple is available right away unlike some other PC vendors.

Overall the machine is good, fast and responsive. I bought this Mac to replace the one I had used for 4 years (the logic board failed on it). I was hesitant about getting this one because of the preloaded version of OS X and my fears were confirmed. I am a graphic designer and have several Adobe design programs and this version of OS X makes it very unstable. Probably because the programs are older but us starving artists simply cannot afford to get new hardware and new software all at once. I don't like the fact that all the USB ports are gathered on one side. My old machine had two one one side and one on the other making it quick and simple to plug things in. When they are all on one side space is tight and I have to grab the wireless mouse usb with my fingernails because there isn't room to use anything else to unplug it.

I am very happy with my new MacBook Pro 17". It is fast and very sleek. I like the compact solid feeling that the unibody gives it. I recommend it!

After owning 4 laptop PCs over the years and ALL of them crashing on me due to nasty viruses, I decided to make the leap. What can I say that hasn't already been said before...soooo easy to use, sooo easy to install programs, sooo sexy, sooo fast! I could go on and on. Graphics and integration with Adobe products and my iPhone apps are much smoother. Service, service, and more service. Apple is there to give you TLC, no matter what your issues are. Love it!

One of the best new features in this years Macbook Pro is that Apple has updated the track pad. In previous years, the Macbook Pro had several issues with the track pad not working and similar problems. Luckily, with this update people were finally able to get their track pad to track correctly and efficiently. The glass on the display is also new this year, with it stretching from edge to edge. Not only does this look better, but it allows people to see more on their screen. Read the rest of this entry »

Reviews

I'm a pretty seasoned computer user. I've been at it since about 1985 and have owned, built, configured and used dozens of computers over that period of time. Now, our office that runs several small businesses has four computers, and my Dell XPS M1530 is the replacement for a 6 year old Dell desktop that served flawlessly but was aging in performance. I did a lot of research before buying this one. My goal was to get a state-of-the-art laptop that would drive its own display alongside a 24" main display. We have a lot of power glitches here in Hawaii, so the laptop's built-in UPS capability was a big plus. This computer did not disappoint. It has the 9300 CPU and is lightning fast for our memory-hog applications. OK, it had a flaw. About a week before the end of the warranty, the HD died. I called tech support, told them the error codes and they immediately confirmed that it was a bad HD and sent a replacement. I asked for some other brand of HD since this one had a known issue and that's why Dell was so quick to acknowledge the need for a replacement. Unfortunately, all they could provide was another one of the same drive. So I ordered an upgrade online (hard drives are so cheap, why not?), and use their replacement in an external-drive enclosure for office backups and large transfers, and I installed the new drive in the XPS. I installed the image I had (of course) saved on our office backup drive, and was up and running in an hour. BTW, it takes about five minutes to replace a drive in this well-designed laptop. And that includes the time to find the screwdriver. Since then, no problems, and the computer performs as it was intended to in the first place. For the occasional use in which I actually use it as a laptop, I love the keyboard feel and overall build quality. This may sound a bit weird from a guy who considers himself totally outside the realm of what is cool and what is not, but this laptop is the best looking rig there is. No doubt about it, the designers had it together on this one! The slot-loading cd/dvd is terrific, the keypad is slick, the display is crisp and clear, and most importantly, the performance is the best of any computer we have ever had in our office. Even working it's proverbial computer-butt off, it never runs anything but warm to the touch. This is in sharp contrast to many reviews that state hot-running as an issue. I understand the 9300 CPU has resolved much of this problem. I gave it five stars only because Dell shipped it with a known HD defect and then refused to replace the drive with a different brand/model/whatever. The logic of that escapes me. For the last fifteen years or so, I have never had a complaint with Dell Tech Support. A caveat here, though, our support has always been from the business direction. I hear that the general consumer support isn't that great. Next time you buy a Dell, try buying it as a business purchase.

I have owned my XPS for 1 year now. Overall I am very satisfied. This is my 4th Dell laptop and the build is the best of all, particularly the hinge on the screen. After a year it is as stiff as it was out of the box. I use this laptop for my business and I am usually on it 7-10 hours per day. The screen is bright and the media player controls are convenient. The only problems I have had are on the touch pad and video card. I do not use a mouse, only the touch pad. Fortunately I purchased the 3 year In-Home warranty because I have already had the touchpad replaced twice and the mother board replaced once. I seem to wear out the left enter key below the touchpad but the entire board has to be replaced. I also lost my WSVGA capability due to a known NVidia 8600GT card problem. Since it is integrated into the motherboard, again the entire board had to be replaced. However, Dell did not hesitate to replace any of the components and sent a technician to my home within 24 hours. This may sound serious but it was repaired quickly and easily and my overall satisfaction with the laptop outweighs any inconvenience.

I have the six cell Dell XPS M1530, Intel core 2duo, cpu8100@2.10Ghz 4GB Ram, Nvidia Geforce 8400Gs, 320GB HD, 2.0 web cam I dont used the battery that much, but this labtop is one of the best I seen, got it Dec 31 2008, price was $1026. with military discount. I am a comsumer and this is my review.

Sleek! This is a great laptop! Loaded with all the latest bells and whistles, cool form, even a sleeve to keep it in.

The Dell XPS M1530 is one of the few Dell computers that comes standard with 4 GB of memory. This amount of memory is rare in Dell computers, and any laptop that is not top of the line. The 250 GB hard drive that also comes standard allows you to store dozens of full length movies, hundreds of thousands of photos or your entire CD collection digitally in no time flat. You would be hard pressed to ever fill up your hard drive on this computer! Read the rest of this entry »

Toshiba Qosmio F50

March 30th, 2010

The Toshiba Qosmio F50 is an amazing computer that offers different features that many people, gamers in particular are looking for. If you are a gamer and want to get into a notebook for a low price, the F50 model is just the type of computer that you need to be looking at.

The F50 model is one of the few models that is designed with the Vibe design elements. These design elements allow someone to feel as if they are really getting a nice laptop. Very few laptop models are given these special vibe elements. While the F50 can brag lots of specs, it can not brag on its size. It is a little bit heavier, and also is not as thin as many other computers.

One of the coolest things about owning the Toshiba Qosmio F50 is that it has one of the most unique boot up shows. Various white lights will pop up on the screen and allow you to feel as if you are floating through the process. The keyboard that is featured with the F50 is quite nice. However, there are two problems with it. First off, it is difficult to see what you are typing and it is more difficult to keep away fingerprints from it.

Some of the best things about this system are that it is meant to be a gaming and multimedia system. The latest processor, video card and sound cards are included to make sure you have some of the best experience. However, the design of the exterior of the computer does detract from it and make the Toshiba Qosmio F50 a little bit more difficult to use.

One of the biggest problems with Toshiba laptops in general, and the Toshiba Qosmio F50 as well is the time that it takes for it to boot up on the first time. It is pain painstakingly slow! However, after you boot up a few times, change some settings, remove unnecessary programs and do everything else in your power, you typically will be able to get everything to work out pretty well.

The heft weight of the power adapter, and sluggish battery time does not make this a very portable system. You will get around 1:45 minutes unplugged with high usage, and 2:30 with lower usage. Not really a leader in its class, but you can use it as a laptop if you have to.

The price of the Toshiba Qosmio F50 is palatable for people in all price ranges. It is on the higher end for entry laptops, lower end for gaming laptops and in the middle for multimedia systems.

Toshiba Satellite A300

March 30th, 2010

The Toshiba Satellite A300 is a computer that looks quite promising on the surface. The real question will be whether or not it preforms under pressure. Let's take a look at the various features that are under the hood of the A300.

With a Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 15.4 WGXA HD display, 320 GB SATA hard drive, and 4 GB of memory this laptop will not let you down. It is not meant to be an ultra portable laptop, but rather a laptop that you can use a desktop replacement. No longer do you need to be sitting at a desktop to get the pure power and speed of a desktop, the Toshiba Satellite A300 will give you everything that you need.

The overall chassis design of the A300 is quite simple of the eyes. There are no shocking colors or anything like that. You simply have a computer that looks black, slick and clean. There is also no gloss finish for your computer to collect fingerprints with. The laptop is only six pounds in weight, making it one of the lighter powerhouse laptops to carry around. Another great feature about it is its smaller size. It is not all that thick or long for a laptop, something that allows more people to use it in different situations.

The default power adapted that comes with the Toshiba Satellite A300 could be much better. The power adapter itself weighs in at nearly 1.5 pounds. However, you can always buy a compatible power adapter that costs much less down the road. The keyboard of the A300 is a little bit more slippery than you might imagine. IT is full size, and is quite easy to type on other that the small slippage issue. One of the biggest issues that people reported with their use of this laptop was the inital boot time being so slow. This is typically only the first time. After the first boot up, people are able to zip right along and get everything they need done.

Unlike other computer companies, Toshiba does a pretty decent job at keeping their laptops clear from junkware. There are programs that are utilities for your computer, but no games or useless programs. There is a trial of Norton 360, which can be useful for those who have not found another anti-virus program. After you have, make sure to uninstall Norton 360 as it is a major resource hog. Even a computer as powerful as the Toshiba Satellite A300 will not be able to keep running at full speed.

Depending on what options you get with your A300 you may find it for as cheap as $499 or as much as $999. It depends upon how much memory, hard drive space and other specifics. The Toshiba Satellite A300 is a overall decent computer for those looking for a great desktop replacement.
