The ASUS Eee PC 1005HA is well known for being one of the most powerful mini laptop computers, or netbooks currently available. Unlike other manufacturers who do not put a great deal of effort into their products. the ASUS Eee stands up when it comes to the most basic computing requirements.

The first thing you are going to notice about the ASUS is that it is sleek and slim in design. It was made with style in mind and has been optimized several times to ensure that you are going to get a slick looking computer. While this is all nice and good, sometimes this can cause your computer manufacturer to compromise on the materials under the hood. This is not the case with ASUS it is still built with top of the line parts. A industry standard 1.66 Ghz processor powers this computer to make sure you can surf the net, reply to some email or simply listen to your music. 1 GB of RAM is installed under the hood to make sure the machine zips along while you are surfing your MySpace or Facebook page for the biggest relationship news of the day. When you do come across a picture that you must have on your hard drive, do not worry about not having space. The ASUS Eee PC 1005HA has a 160 GB hard drive that can fit hundreds of thousands of pictures without nearing its maximum disk space.

Reviews

Given all the bad press received by Windows 7 starter, my expectations were beat down before I ever bought the Asus 1005HA netbook. I was resolved to load up a linux ubuntu OS even before I received it. But hey, Win 7 is working just fine. I use mostly open source software like VLC and Open Office. Youtube works well within Firefox. Here's the best part. I've been streaming Netflix vids in Firefox to my big screen's VGA over a wireless N connection. It's not HD, there an occasional stutter, but heck this is a netbook! :)

Micro$oft hurt its already shaky reputation by advertising that they distributed a flawed OS. I ran into a Microsoft rep at the loacl FRYS store and even she was bad-mouthing Win 7 starter and said "you can play any media on it". Ha. I guess they give out all that propaganda thinking that people would just automatically shell out for the upgrades? No me. I bought the netbook because it was cheap and functional, and paying extra for some marginal OS features just makes no sense for a netbook. What am I missing?

I've got no complaints with the Asus hardware after several weeks. The battery life is great, there's no need to lug around a power supply. I can even use the touchpad and I always disable it on my laptops, though I do carry a USB wireless mouse. The audio jack is getting flaky, but that's solved with a USB audio gadget.

Save your money. Use it out of the box, as is until something really breaks.

On January I bought this netbook for my wife. I was glad. The netbook is amazingly light, it`s easy to work with, it runs fast. I recommended it to some friends of mine, who eventually bought Asus EEEs. Suddenly, last Wednesday it stop working. As I am abroad at the moment, I tried to find a place where to have it repaired (using the worlwide warranty), but there are no service places in Uruguay. We needed it badly, we had very important information in it, so we went to a PC-reparation service. They told us that the motherboard needed to be changed, that it is a very common problem and that it would cost us USD 75.

Don't listen to what the others say. I got this item USED and have no problems with it at all. YouTube loads fine and there is no problem with charging. It does great with 1 GB of RAM for typical browsing/documents. I use this as a replacement for my desktop while I'm at school. The battery life is AWESOME! Realistically you're going to get about 8.5 hours instead of the listed 10.5 doing the normal screen brightness and WiFi. The best part of this netbook is the almost full size keyboard. You don't have to be typing with 2 fingers... The two things I can complain about are poor image resolution and all the pre-installed programs while just take up space. Otherwise you're looking at relatively decent performance, an AMAZING energy conserver, all at a VERY REASONABLE price.

I purchased this netbook in November 2009 and the keyboard just stopped working (August 2010). Despite the fact that the item should still be under warranty I'm getting the run-around from ASUS customer support. The telephone support reps are in a hurry to get me off the phone and keep insisting I need to wait for their "head office" to clear me to send the item back for repair. It has been 5 business days since I sent them my invoice and they say that they need more time to process the request (but are unable to give me an estimate of how long that is). Buyer beware!

I live in Brazil. I've bought this netbook less than a year ago while on a trip in the U.S. because it's cheaper over there. Although it is said the the warranty is worldwide, ASUS in Brazil states that they only accept items bought in Brazil through their official dealers. The warranty booklet says that it is International. But this is statement is tricky, because you have to send it abroad, which would cost more than the netbook itself. So it is not a reliable company. Nor their products. The LCD screen came with a defect (A vertical line right in the middle of the screen). I didn't have time to get it fixed while in the US, so I decided to bring it home, hoping that I would get it fixed over there...no way...so I kept it as is. I use it mostly just on my trips, so I used it very lightly. Its appeareance now is like new. Even though using it so rarely, I got a keyboard problem which makes any typing a nightmare. I am used to the robustness of Lenovo's (IBM) notebooks that I use daily for MANY Years on my work and I NEVER got such problems. I actually bought a Lenovo netbook to my son at the same time and he is very happy with his, no problems up to now. So I do not recommend ASUS in General and this netbook in particular. I'll never buy their products again.

There are a few downsides to using the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA though. One of the biggest downsides is that you still have to be careful with it. You cannot run resource intensive applications such as computer games and you will not be able to run many programs at the same time. While this can be a drag to the power user, it will not annoy those who are simply using their computer for everyday activities. You just need to know the limits of the machine before you go out and purchase one!

[phpbay]ASUS Eee PC 1005HA,33,177,''[/phpbay]

One of the bad things about this edition of the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA is that it has gotten a little bit bigger and is reaching the upper range of the netbook market. It is not as bad as some other models, but for a netbook it is reaching the limits of current models. However, for the low price of $350 to $400 it is a must buy product. You can use it almost anywhere, provided that you have an internet connection. What are you waiting for, get one of the best netbooks on the market today!

I'm not a big computer guy...just give me a good screen and reasonbly fast execution and I'm happy

I went with this Dell laptop about 2 years ago because my first computer was a Dell desktop that was great; so I figured a Dell laptop was the way to go and didn't consider any other brand...I paid my $1000 bucks directly to Dell

Mind you i'm no tech-junkie...I don't stretch it any further than Word..E-mail..Shopping..and YouTube

BUT

I do type quite a bit...and this keyboard has started to fail after about 1 1/2 years....Constantly having to go back and
ix words (

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1W2W6RTYQOY4T This is the Dell Studio 15 inch laptop (Green Colored Case). I think this a great lap top and it gets the job done. I kept reading all the negative reviews and i have no idea why there's so much bad press. I have never once called customer service and i ordered my laptop at Dell directly through their website. I have no reason to contact customer service and i never experienced any problems at all with any of my Dell products. I get so baffled when i read all these negative reviews. My Dell products which i have had for years including a Dell desktop and a recently purchased new netbooks have never been a problem. The desk top i have is more than 6 years old and I never have any problems. It runs great. It can definitely benefit from an upgrade in some areas.

The Studio line is Dell's midrange laptops. The Inspiron being there low end range for consumers that just need a standard laptop. The Dell Studio laptop is completely plastic and it's a bit on the heavy side in my opinion. Maybe because i am so use to my light weight Dell 10 min netbook that i have been spoiled. This is a good lap top. However, i think the flaw in Dell is that their products can get very pricey very quickly. Especially when you are adding in high end features like 6GB RAM rather than 3GB RAM or 2.99GHZ instead of 2.33GHZ etc. You can get the same thing at HP for probably around a hundred dollars less and their quality feels a bit more refined, polished, and sturdy. That being said if you check Dell's website they do have deals going on all the time especially on holidays. But for some reason the price never seems as low as it should be. If you check periodically you will find yourself a deal. I go to that website religiously and build the exact same laptop that I have and it always comes up to more money. I got mine on a special promo.

I really regret getting the green covered case. I didn't realize how bright it would be and once i opened it out of the box - I really wish i purchased the Dark Blue or Dark Purple colored case. It's really way too bright. I like the personalization options of the different colors, but i really do regret getting this bright Caribbean green color. My laptop also includes the backlit keyboard which is great for typing in the dark. It also has touch sensitive controls towards the top of the keyboard near the speakers and i think that's a great plus. The DVD is also an optical drive, so there is no door that slides out for you to pop in your DVD. It's like a Playstation 3 slot. You slide the DVDs in & out.

Pros:
15 inch screen
Optical DVD slot
4GB RAM
750 GB Memory
2.66GHZ
Backlit keyboard
4 UBS slots
HDMI outport
Sleak shiek design
Different colored cases
Wi-Fi
Webcam

Cons:
Windows Vista (Super Whack)
A bit pricey in my opinion (That's Dell for you)
A bit on the heavy side

Another great feature of this laptop is that it has a 250 GB hard drive that will allow you to get plenty of pictures, files and videos into your laptop. It could take years before you get close to using all of the space that your hard drive provides. Another very important feature of the Dell Studio 17 is its ability to handle optical media. While many computers can burn and play DVD's, the Dell Studio 17 is able to do this quickly and efficiently. A 8X DVD dual read/write machine can read each and every DVD at 8X the normal speed.

One of the difficult downsides of this computer is that it uses Microsoft's Vista operating system. Vista simply does not work well as an operating system, and has not been widely adapted by many users, including businesses. Luckily Microsoft is releasing the new version of their operating system called Windows 7 in the middle of October. This will allow consumers to get the best of Vista with the stability of a new operating system. Most Dell computers, including the Dell Studio 17 include a free upgrade to Windows 7 with the computer. You will receive this upgrade in the mail after Windows 7 is released and can either keep Vista on your computer or insert the DVD to upgrade your computer to Windows 7.

[phpbay]Dell Studio 17,33,177,''[/phpbay]

While you may not like the fact that Dell is currently selling the Studio 17 with Vista, it should not be a detractor from purchasing this computer. The parts under the hood are only the best in quality and performance. With a starting price of $650, this is one of the best computers in its size. Consider purchasing a Dell Studio 17 as your desktop replacement computer or for business. It will allow you to have a powerful machine that is ultra portable and can be taken wherever you need to go!

The HP TouchSmart tx2z brings something different to the netbook market. Unlike other netbooks which are traditional laptops, this netbook allows you to turn it into a tablet. This is one of a new range of netbooks which are going to be more functional for users and businesses. However, why would you want to be able to turn a netbook into a tablet you ask? Well, to be quite honest it just looks like a fun design. If for nothing else, you can enjoy its unique ability to become a tablet and twist around in a different direction.

While the tablet making ability of the HP TouchSmart tx2z is quite interesting, the real ground breaker is its wide array of port selections for a netbook. You will never see as many ports on a netbook as you see on the HP TouchSmart tx2z. In fact, many laptops that are made by HP or Dell do not have as many of the ports as this laptop has!

However, there are a few drawbacks to this netbook, just like there are drawbacks to the other netbooks. For example, the price can be quite high for people who want something a little bit cheaper. You may not want to pay close to $800 for a simple netbook. That is what most people are paying for their laptops right now. However, if you are interested the other downfall of the HP TouchSmart tx2z is that it does not live long from an outlet. The battery that is included with the TouchSmart simply does not live long enough when compared to many of the other netbooks on the market. Other common problems with the device include a sluggish performance in high resource usage programs and a touch screen that can lose its responsiveness.

Reviews

I have had a HP tx2z touchsmart laptop for about a year now, I also bought the 2-year accidental protection plan (about a third of the laptop in cost). When I first bought it I had one issue with the touch screen that took about 3 weeks to get fixed and two hour long calls to HP. About a month ago I started having bad heat issues and my video card started going bad. I have spent 6 calls, 1+ hour each, on the phone with HP. One month later and I still don't even have a box to send my HP laptop in for repair. BEWARE OF HP.

Fresh out of the box, the HP Touchsmart tx2z is terribly slow due to bloatware. But even after removing everything (I recommend CCleaner.) and upgrading to Windows 7, boot time takes about 3 minutes (slow! especially for 2.30 GHz and 4GB RAM). Performance is okay, but is disappointing compared to other laptops with the same or similar specs. (It also feels cheap compared to other laptops at this price point.) This laptop does tend to run hot, and the fan will get loud. The screen is rather grainy, but not terrible. The addition of a webcam seems to have been an afterthought: images are pixellated; there is high discoloration; and video+sound don't sync up on HP's own software. The speakers are very loud, but sound is not very clear/undistorted even at the lowest volume. Concerning battery life, I can get through about 5 hours of note-taking on "Power Saver" and 3 hours on "HP Recommended."

This may only be relevant to my experience, but after only a month of use, the keyboard failed. HP asked me to backup my data, send the laptop back so that they could wipe it and replace the keyboard, and get it back to me... which would have taken about a month. I ended up buying a compatible keyboard on Ebay and replacing it myself.

I have owned this laptop for about a year now, and while it gets the job done... it was disappointing initially and is now frustrating at times. I'm simply waiting until the hard drive craps out or until enough time passes when I can by a more responsive non-HP brand laptop without feeling guilty.

I purchased this laptop in October from HP's website. It came with a lot of bloatware, which really slowed it down. After removing many of the third party applications pre-installed on the laptop it was much more responsive. When I bought the laptop, it qualified for a free upgrade to windows 7 and after installing Windows 7 it was like a whole new computer. It boots up faster and seems more responsive than with windows vista.

In contrast to LawnMower Man's experience, my power supply is silent, the touchscreen responds well to my finger and stylus, and the laptop seems very sturdily built. The viewing angle of the screen could be better, but if the screen is facing you, you shouldn't have any problems.

I didn't think I would find much of a difference between my old notebook and a tablet notebook, but it has completely changed how I browse the internet, read .pdfs, and take notes. The handwriting recognition software is pretty good out of the box, but you can train it to better recognise your handwriting so you can convert your hand written notes to text with few errors.

I rarely ever use the touchpad mouse on the laptop. When using the tablet like a regular notebook, its much more convenient to move windows and highlight text directly on the screen than it ever was to manipulate a touchpad mouse.

I've really enjoyed using this tablet so far. The touchscreen is responsive and accurate, and it was much cheaper than other tablet PCs on the market (e.g. lenovo).

I'll keep this short and sweet. **Do your homework before ordering this tablet**

I bought mine in 7/2009 and am on my 4th one. Yes, I have sent it back for repair or replacement THREE times, and am waiting for the shipping box to return this one as well, as this one came back from repair with defective touchscreen, non-working fingerprint reader, buzzing power supply and an SD card reader which isn't screwed in (so it doesn't line up with the frame).

Only HP could ship out such a POS.

If this tablet PC actually worked as advertised it would be my dream notebook. It doesn't. In fact, it doesn't even come close.

The problems which make this great idea a horrible notebook to own:

-- The mouse cursor jumps to a certain point on the screen over and over (sometimes clicking, which is always fun when that 'spot' is over the X button). The 'certain point' varies by the notebook, sometimes it is lower left, some right,.. you get the idea. Add to this the makers of the touch panel, N-trig, have yet to make fully working drivers for any OS. N-trig, the company which tells you flat out that updating your tablet's driver can render it irreparable.. and they mean it! TONS of people have had to return their TX2z to HP for replacement because the touch driver killed their tablet.

-- The power supply buzzes.. loudly! The buzzing varies by how bright the screen is. If you are superman and can see the screen turned all the way down, it is ignorable. If you want to see your screen, it buzzes to no end. If you want a bright screen, grab your ear plugs.

-- The fingerprint reader works.. sometimes. More specifically, it works about ~25% of the time. The other 75% of the time it completely ignores your finger swipes. That, of course, is assuming the software doesn't crash (yes, even on a fresh install).

-- It's a tablet, you can hold it at any angle.. you just can't see it at any angle! The screen turns to a bright mush if you hold the tablet at any angle besides directly. If you are drawing, or writing, and want to adjust for your hand position, you no longer get to see the screen because it washes out.

If you really love this tablet, you can buy mine, just as soon as HP sends it back from repair.. FOR THE FOURTH TIME.

[phpbay]HP TouchSmart tx2z,33,177,''[/phpbay]

While all of these bad factors can be real detractors, it does not mean that the HP TouchSmart tx2z is not a good notebook overall. In fact, it is probably one of the best in the netbook range simply because of its ability to turn into a tablet as well as being used as a connection station for almost every type of port possible. The price of the netbook is perfect for businesses, who would be the main type of customers who would benefit from the ability to turn it into a tablet. However, if you have the extra cash laying around, the HP TouchSmart tx2z is currently available for $769.99 and can be bought online from HP through their website.

The Lenovo IdeaPad U110 is one of the strongest built netbooks in the industry. While the computer is not as small as some netbooks, the additional size allows it to be used for so much more than it typically is known for.

Unlike many of the netbooks, this IdeaPad comes with a dual core processor! Finally, a netbook that contains some type of power under the hood. However, do not get your hopes up about winning any processor races. Sure, the processor preforms decent enough for you to be able to browse pictures, process word documents and surf through a few pages on the internet at the same time, but it will not make up for a full sized desktop.

I bought this laptop just over a year ago. Its been great other then I noticed the hard drive occasional skipping. Noticeable during video playback and slightly moving the laptop. The hard drive finally died just after one year. (Just past the warranty period). Lenovo wanted $305 for a replacement 120gb 1.8in hard drive plus $49 processing and a mandatory $10 for the recovery disk (that I don't need) $365 for a 120gig hard drive. After hours on the phone with them and several diff customer service areas - They had no alternatives. Im just going to junk the thing and buy a diff laptop...... Im never buying Lenovo ever again... bad company experience

I have had the Lenovo U110 IdeaPad for about a month now. The notebook functions very well and I am using it for browsing, MS office, and Quickbooks.

What I like:
  - The slim design and light weight
  - The large keys
  - The bright crisp display
  - Reasonable performance
  - Overall look and feel
  - Red color is nice and the Klingon looking A/V keys are kind of cool

What I don't like
  - No TrackPoint (like the ThinkPad models)
  - No keyboard light (like the Thinkpad models)
  - No option for MS Windows Professional or Windows XP
  - No option for high speed disk drive
  - Detached but very large DVD writer
  - Shiny key caps always have fingerprints
  - Very flimsy LCD display housing - it flexes and separates when you grab it.

Should have got the small ThinkPad instead. Not as cool looking but better functionality

Pros
Cool sexy sleek design
Light weight
Nice battery life with extended battery
Acceptable overall performance
Plays some good games as well
Strong wifi signal
Screen may be glossy when off, but when on you hardly see a reflection
Although might look like hard to use, I have no problems using keyboard
touch pad is awesome
solid build
Portable Optical Device included

Cons
fingerprint magnet
Slow startup with veriface
Sometimes lags with multi-tasing jobs

After 15 years of heavy, ugly laptops, this is a dream. After installing XP, feels fast.

One of the downsides of the IdeaPad U110 is that it comes standard with Windows Vista. This operating system is the killer of netbooks as so many different programs are loaded on top of it, and then the operating system itself has to run. This makes for much slower speeds than if you were using a larger laptop or desktop.

An amazing thing about the IdeaPad U110 is that it has a stellar backlit LCD screen. This is something that you will not normally see in many laptops, let alone netbooks! Sadly, the U110 has a little bit of a problem with the keyboard. It simply does not have a good enough keyboard for people who are going to use it all the time to type. You want to be sure your hands hit the right key, and the U110 simply does not allow you to do this.

However, one of the nicer things about the IdeaPad U110 is that its trackpad actually works pretty well. Many netbooks have a low quality trackpad because they are trying to cut costs and make it a good computer. Luckily Lenovo kept a high quality trackpad in this machine. You will be able to move your mouse all over the screen and feel comfortable doing so.

[phpbay]Lenovo IdeaPad U110,33,177,''[/phpbay]

The IdeaPad U110 is pretty good on battery and heat power. It is not a "laptop", but a netbook that is meant to be set on some type of surface. It does get warm, just not as much as some of the other computers on the market. You also will be able to get around one hour on the battery with heavy use and 3 hours if you are simply using it for something easy.

If you want a computer that is extremely portable and is easy to use, choose the Lenovo IdeaPad U110. While it is not built to be a desktop replacement it is still one of the best netbooks on the market, despite the high sticker price of $1,800.

Reviews

Decent gaming computer, but buying from amazon sticks you with factory defaults. It would be easier and probably cheaper just to buy from [...] unless you are like me and live in an area that they dont deliver to.

I ordered my Alienware M15x through the Dell website on 12/3/2009. Delivery occurred on 12/18/2009, which was the original order anticipated build completion date. Nice! The laptop is replacing a home-built custom quad-core Cosmos gaming PC.

During the purchase process, I opted for the RAM upgrade to 4GB @ 1333MHz, upgraded the video card to the 260m (and got a $50 Dell promo gift card from this), got the 1080p screen, and upped the hard drive to 320GB. I subscribe to Steve Job's notion that Blu-Ray is a bag of hurt, so I stuck with the DVD/CD slot burner.

Performance-wise, the M15x is Sea Biscuit. I've thrown several games at it, from Crysis (silky-smooth at high resolution), WoW, Torchlight, Fallout 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Half-Life 2, Sins of a Solar Empire, and Company of Heroes. All ran flawlessly, at max or near-max settings. The standard Core i7 1.6GHz (2.8GHz turbo) cuts through these applications like nothing I've seen. While I enjoyed overclocking my custom desktop PC, this machine doesn't really need it. It's greased lightning right out of the box.

Pros:

I liked the price point. I knew I was getting a great machine for the money, and what I spent matches what I received.

Weight. This is a desktop replacement, so I expected some heft. I like the fact that this thing has some meat to it. If I wanted a light, take-anywhere laptop, I would have bought a netbook.

Alienware effects/polish/workmanship - worth the price of admission. This is a beautiful machine.

Dell's service. Anytime a company underpromises and overdelivers, I'm a happy camper. The M15x arrived way ahead of schedule, packaged professionally, and came out of the box ready to roll.

My cons are pretty similar to other reviewers:

- screen is really reflective, but playing in a darker room mitigates this.

- touchpad. I don't know who was driving the boat when they decided on this particular hardware. It's not that bad, but it's not great either. Onscreen movement is pretty herky-jerky, even after software update. Mouse-users won't bother with it.

After years of desktop machines and business laptops, this is my first personal laptop, and start-to-finish, it's been a great experience. It's easily replaced my workhorse desktop for all my uses. I will gladly buy Dell/Alienware again down the road. Can't recommend it enough.

One of the downsides right out of the box with these Alienware machine is price. They do have some of the best parts inside of them, but the price that you will pay for the privilege of using them is quite high.

While the price may be high, the specs on the inside of the box are simply amazing. There is nothing better than this 2.8 GHz extreme dual core processor. 4 GB of memory can be put into your machine. This will not only allow it to zip along at unbelievably fast speeds, but it will allow you to use your computer in many different programs.

The new outside body of the Alienware m15x is not getting as many rave reviews as you might think. A lot of people are simply not happy with how the outside of this computer was put together. The chassis feels heavy and difficult to use for the average user. While this may be because of what is inside the machine, it is much more likely the materials used in the chassis itself.

Windows Vista Premium is currently the standard operating system on this computer, however that may change with the release of Windows 7 later in October 2009. The new Windows 7 operating system may allow for better use of the computer, as well as new features. Keep an eye out if you are able to score a free or discounted upgrade on the new operating system.

The optical Blu-Ray drive within your Alienware m15x will allow you to watch Blu-Ray movies where ever you go. Not only is this a great feature, but it is a valuable feature for the future. Your computer may not be worth as much as your purchase price a few years down the road, but by having a Blu-Ray drive installed you are already ahead of the crowd.

One of the additional pet peeves for some users is that this laptop only comes with three USB ports. For people who have a lot of accessories or use their laptop as a desktop replacement you may want to buy a USB hub port to add on to your laptop. This will allow you to connect even more USB devices to your system.

While the base system price starts at $2,499, the system can quickly go up to $3,700. The Alienware m15x is still a great choice regardless. It has the power, features and feeling of a high end luxury computer.

Amazon.com has certified this product is Frustration Free. A Frustration-Free Package is easy-to-open and comes without hard plastic "clamshell" casings, plastic bindings, and wire ties. It's designed to be opened without the use of a box cutter or knife and will protect your product just as well as traditional packaging during shipping. Products with Frustration-Free Packaging can frequently be shipped in their own boxes, without the need for an additional shipping box. Learn more about Frustration-Free Packaging. Featuring a precision unibody enclosure crafted from a single block of aluminum, the 17-inch MacBook Pro is thinner and lighter than its predecessor as well as stronger and more durable. But Apple didn't stop innovating with the body's design. The MacBook Pro also includes a new high-resolution LED-backlit widescreen with a 1920-by-1200-pixel resolution, a greater color gamut for more vibrant colors, and a 700:1 contrast ratio that makes whites brighter and blacks blacker. It also includes the new glass trackpad that does away with the trackpad button (for larger tracking area) and features Apple's Multi-Touch technology. And the non-removable battery lasts up to 8 hours on a single charge and can be recharged up to 1000 times--compared with only 200 to 300 times for typical notebooks. The 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro (see larger version). Under the hood, the MacBook Pro is powered by a powerful 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (with 6 MB L2 cache and 1066 MHz front-side bus), which runs applications faster and more efficiently as well as helps to reduce power requirements and save on battery life. And the MacBook Pro includes two video processors for ultimate flexibility: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics for great everyday performance and NVIDIA 9600M GT discrete graphics (512 MB of GDDR3 memory) for fast, smooth video--perfect for 3D gaming. Other hardware features include a 500 GB hard drive, 4 GB of installed RAM (which can be upgraded to 8 GB), an 8x combo Superdrive (for burning dual-layer DVDs as well as CDs), built-in Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), FireWire 800 port, Mini DisplayPort video output (for DVI and VGA connections), and an ExpressCard/34 expansion card slot for expansion solutions such as 3G cellular networking. It comes pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system--an operating system custom-designed for the advanced technology inside--and it also comes with the iLife '09 suite of applications, including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes. The Unibody MacBook Pro Design Traditionally notebooks are made from multiple parts. With the MacBook Pro all of those parts with just one part--the breakthrough unibody enclosure. Every MacBook Pro starts its life as a single block of aluminum, which is precisely machined into the basic unibody design. Another pass and the unibody takes shape. Another, and the integrated keyboard emerges. When you pick up a new MacBook Pro, you immediately notice the entire enclosure is thinner and lighter. And it feels strong and durable--perfect for life inside (and outside) your briefcase or backpack. The standard aluminum electro-static trackpad has been replaced with a new glass Multi-Touch trackpad, which provides 40 percent more tracking area than before. Use two fingers to scroll up and down a page. Pinch to zoom in and out. Rotate an image with your fingertips. Swipe with three fingers to flip through your photo libraries. Swipe with four fingers to show your desktop, view all open windows, or switch applications. The entire trackpad surface is also a button, allowing you to both track and click virtually anywhere on the trackpad. And you can easily enable multiple virtual buttons in software, such as right-clicking. The keyboard has also been improved, with the rigid aluminum keyboard webbing cut precisely to hold the keys, which are curved to perfectly fit fingers. And it's illuminated, so when you're in low-light settings, such as airplanes or conference rooms, you can always see what you're typing. Vibrant Display With the high-resolution LED-backlit widescreen display on the 17-inch MacBook Pro, you get desktop-quality color in an Apple notebook for the first time. The moment you open your MacBook Pro, you're greeted instantly by full, corner-to-corner screen brightness. The 1920 x 1200-pixel resolution (133 pixels per inch) means you can view more palettes and windows or watch HD video in its native 1920 x 1080 resolution. Perfect whether you're working in the studio or out in the field, the display offers a 60 percent greater color gamut than previous generations for richer, more vibrant colors and a 700:1 contrast ratio that makes whites brighter and blacks blacker. In addition, the seamless glass enclosure makes the display stronger and more durable. Because it's power efficient and the glass is mercury- and arsenic-free, it's also greener than ever. Long-Lasting Battery The 17-inch MacBook Pro includes a newly engineered lithium-polymer battery that that lasts up to 8 hours on a single charge thanks to advanced chemistry, intelligent monitoring of the system and battery, and Adaptive Charging technology. The battery is built right into the computer, eliminating the space-consuming mechanisms and housings that standard removable batteries require. This non-removable battery also provides a longer battery lifespan of up to 1000 recharges--meaning fewer depleted batteries and less waste, which is better for the environment. Giving it a lifespan of up to 1000 recharges required breakthroughs in battery technology. Apple electro-chemists developed advanced chemistry that maintains the battery's charging capabilities longer than ever. And while most notebooks wear down their batteries by charging them at a constant rate, the 17-inch MacBook Pro takes a different approach. Using an Apple-developed technology called Adaptive Charging, a microchip on the battery constantly communicates with the computer to determine the optimal way to charge its cells, adjusting the current up and down depending on a variety of conditions. Combined, these advancements offer a dramatic improvement in battery lifespan: more than three times the lifespan of typical notebook batteries--up to five years. Off-the-shelf lithium-ion cells come in fixed, cylindrical shapes. The 17-inch MacBook Pro is powered by custom-made, ultrathin lithium-polymer batteries. Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 2.80 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which has a super-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an extra-large 6 MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) The hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. With 6 MB of shared L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle. Video Processing & Output The 17-inch MacBook Pro combines the efficiency of an integrated graphics processor with the desktop-class performance of a discrete graphics processor thanks to the inclusion of both. Out of the box, it runs the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M processor, which provides plenty of performance for everyday use with up to 5 hours of battery life. But when you need turbocharged performance for the most graphically intensive tasks, the discrete NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT processor delivers--such as for demanding 3D games like Quake, Call of Duty, and Spore. And thanks to a new graphics architecture, it's easy to switch between these two processors. The 9400M graphics processor shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory, while the 9600M provides 512 MB of dedicated GDDR3 video memory. The MacBook Pro includes a next generation Mini DisplayPort, which delivers a pure digital signal that can drive up to a 30-inch widescreen display. The Mini DisplayPort is ultra-compact at just 10 percent the size of a full DVI connector, and is compatible with Apple's 24-inch Cinema Display. Adapters are also available for using VGA, DVI/HDMI and Dual-Link DVI displays Hard Drive and Memory The 500 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to USB 2.0. The 4 GB of PC3-8500 DDR3 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1024 MB) has an industry-leading 1066 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 8 GB. Wireless Connectivity The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague. Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight Artfully placed in the glass display is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up to 10 people and provides high-quality audio compression and full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. For video podcasting, you can record a short clip using the iSight camera, then use iWeb to create a video blog entry or post your GarageBand-recorded podcast. Other Features Three USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 800, ExpressCard/34 slot Mini DisplayPort compatible with DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI connectors (all optional) Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors 8x slot-loading SuperDrive with the following write speeds: 8x DVD±R; 4x DVD±R DL (double layer); 4x DVD±RW; 24x CD-R; 10x CD-RW Built-in full-size backlit keyboard with 78 (U.S.) or 79 (ISO) keys, including 12 function keys and 4 arrow keys (inverted "T" arrangement) Internal omnidirectional microphone and built-in speakers Combined optical digital output/headphone out (minijack) Combined optical digital input/audio line in (minijack) 95-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery providing up to 8 hours of battery life using 9400M graphics (up to 7 hours using 9600M graphics) Kensington lock slot Measures 15.47 x 10.51 x 0.98 inches (WxDxH) and weighs 6.6 pounds (including battery) Environmental Considerations Apple has worked hard to eliminate many of the toxins that are a common part of computer manufacturing. Apple engineers removed the majority of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from circuit boards, internal cables, connectors, insulators, adhesives, and more in the MacBook Pro. Because Apple makes both the hardware and the software for the MacBook, they're designed to work together to produce a smarter product that uses less electricity. For instance, to reduce energy consumption, the hard drive spins down automatically when inactive. MacBook Air also decides which processor--CPU or GPU--is best suited to efficiently perform a task. The LED-backlit display in the MacBook Pro is another feature that plays an important part in conserving energy, consuming 30 percent less power than conventional LCD displays. And the display is designed to dim when you enter a darkened room. The MacBook Pro meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR certification. MacBook also meets the latest efficiency requirements of ENERGY STAR Version 5.0 Specification for Computers before its July 2009 effective date. The MacBook Pro has also earned the highest rating of EPEAT Gold. The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, or EPEAT, evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses, and how it's designed and manufactured.
Reviews

I have owned a 4 Macbook Pro's ever since they came out with the Intel machines. Before that, I had one 15" Powerbook and a 12" Powerbook so I have had a number of Apple laptops. This 17" is absolutely the best I have had so far. My last one was a 15" 2.66ghz that I only had for 2 months before my local Microcenter dropped the price on these 17" to where I was able to sell the 15" for more than it cost me to upgrade to the 17".

Big things about the 17" are the screen and the battery life. My office computer is a Mac Pro with the 23" Cinema display, so now I can set up my laptop with the same screen resolution and apps take up the same amount of screen real estate as on the desktop, only the text is a bit smaller. The illumination is perfect from corner to corner and text and pictures are extremely sharp.

The first thing I noticed when I started using this laptop was how long the battery lasts. Despite claimed life, my previous 15" Macbook Pro's never seemed to last much over 1 1/2 hours of normal use. This 17" seems to last all day, I am sure I get at least 5-6 hours of use, with both wifi and bluetooth on, and the screen at full brightness. This is the best battery life I have had out of any laptop I have owned including a number of Thinkpads that I use for my job. It is a true coast to coast battery.

Everything else about this laptop is first class. The touchpad is very responsive, although I do tend to use a mouse especially for using Adobe Illustrator and that type of program. The speakers are OK. The keyboard is great, especially now that I have switched to the newer chic-let style keyboard on my Mac Pro. The 500gb drive has loads of space, and since it is so large, being a 5400 rpm does not make it feel as slow as if it was a smaller capacity.

I have not tested the new i5/i7 versions of the MBP, but for my money, this last-generation 17" is one I will be holding on to for at least 2-3 years.

I recently purchased an Apple MacBook Pro. What a great product. The keyboard is easy to type on and the shortcut keys make it a breeze to get things done quickly. It was very easy to transfer existing files from my Mac Pro (tower) computer to the laptop. I was up and running in no time. The back lit keyboard is nice as is the anti glare screen.

I HIGHLY recommend this product!!!! I have always had Apple computers and wouldn't want to use anything but a Mac!!!

Shopping on Amazon and comparing prices with the Mac Store, Amazon beat the price significantly!!!

It was delivered in a timely fashion!!!

All I have to say is this is a great computer and if you need service Apple is available right away unlike some other PC vendors.

Overall the machine is good, fast and responsive.

I bought this Mac to replace the one I had used for 4 years (the logic board failed on it). I was hesitant about getting this one because of the preloaded version of OS X and my fears were confirmed. I am a graphic designer and have several Adobe design programs and this version of OS X makes it very unstable. Probably because the programs are older but us starving artists simply cannot afford to get new hardware and new software all at once.

I don't like the fact that all the USB ports are gathered on one side. My old machine had two one one side and one on the other making it quick and simple to plug things in. When they are all on one side space is tight and I have to grab the wireless mouse usb with my fingernails because there isn't room to use anything else to unplug it.

I am very happy with my new MacBook Pro 17". It is fast and very sleek. I like the compact solid feeling that the unibody gives it. I recommend it!

One of the best new features in this years Macbook Pro is that Apple has updated the track pad. In previous years, the Macbook Pro had several issues with the track pad not working and similar problems. Luckily, with this update people were finally able to get their track pad to track correctly and efficiently. The glass on the display is also new this year, with it stretching from edge to edge. Not only does this look better, but it allows people to see more on their screen.

Depending upon what model of the 2009 Macbook Pro you buy you may be interested to hear about the new aluminum body. That is right, Apple has finally brought the aluminum body to the 17 inch model of the Macbook Pro. Last year you could find the 15 inch with this aluminum body, but not the 17 inch.

Once again, some of the features that are inside this computer are simply amazing. You can get a Intel Core 2 Duo processor that runs at 2.66 GHz as well as 4 GB of memory. However, depending upon the options inside of your 2009 Macbook Pro you could be paying anywhere from $2,000 to $3,000.

One of the other great features about the new Macbook computers is that they are much thinner. This allows people to use them wherever they go, and not have to worry about carrying around heavy computers. After all, who would want to risk the chance of dropping their very expensive Macbook Pro on the ground?

Depending upon the options that you select, the battery time for your 2009 Macbook Pro is not all that bad. In a video intensive test, the battery lasted around 4 hours and 14 minutes. With simple regular usage, an additional 30 minutes could be added before the system ran out of juice.

Once again with Apple, the biggest problem is the battery. You are simply out of luck if your battery runs out of charge. You cannot hot swap out your battery like with many other laptops. There are some workarounds for this, but you still would like to have a laptop that allows you to change out the battery.

Whether you are looking for an Apple computer or want a 2009 Macbook Pro in particular, you can get one of the best computers on the market. However, the price may be a little bit high for some people, just save up, it is well worth it!

Reviews

I'm a pretty seasoned computer user. I've been at it since about 1985 and have owned, built, configured and used dozens of computers over that period of time. Now, our office that runs several small businesses has four computers, and my Dell XPS M1530 is the replacement for a 6 year old Dell desktop that served flawlessly but was aging in performance. I did a lot of research before buying this one. My goal was to get a state-of-the-art laptop that would drive its own display alongside a 24" main display. We have a lot of power glitches here in Hawaii, so the laptop's built-in UPS capability was a big plus.

This computer did not disappoint. It has the 9300 CPU and is lightning fast for our memory-hog applications. OK, it had a flaw. About a week before the end of the warranty, the HD died. I called tech support, told them the error codes and they immediately confirmed that it was a bad HD and sent a replacement. I asked for some other brand of HD since this one had a known issue and that's why Dell was so quick to acknowledge the need for a replacement. Unfortunately, all they could provide was another one of the same drive. So I ordered an upgrade online (hard drives are so cheap, why not?), and use their replacement in an external-drive enclosure for office backups and large transfers, and I installed the new drive in the XPS. I installed the image I had (of course) saved on our office backup drive, and was up and running in an hour. BTW, it takes about five minutes to replace a drive in this well-designed laptop. And that includes the time to find the screwdriver.

Since then, no problems, and the computer performs as it was intended to in the first place. For the occasional use in which I actually use it as a laptop, I love the keyboard feel and overall build quality. This may sound a bit weird from a guy who considers himself totally outside the realm of what is cool and what is not, but this laptop is the best looking rig there is. No doubt about it, the designers had it together on this one!

The slot-loading cd/dvd is terrific, the keypad is slick, the display is crisp and clear, and most importantly, the performance is the best of any computer we have ever had in our office. Even working it's proverbial computer-butt off, it never runs anything but warm to the touch. This is in sharp contrast to many reviews that state hot-running as an issue. I understand the 9300 CPU has resolved much of this problem.

I gave it five stars only because Dell shipped it with a known HD defect and then refused to replace the drive with a different brand/model/whatever. The logic of that escapes me. For the last fifteen years or so, I have never had a complaint with Dell Tech Support. A caveat here, though, our support has always been from the business direction. I hear that the general consumer support isn't that great. Next time you buy a Dell, try buying it as a business purchase.

I have owned my XPS for 1 year now. Overall I am very satisfied. This is my 4th Dell laptop and the build is the best of all, particularly the hinge on the screen. After a year it is as stiff as it was out of the box. I use this laptop for my business and I am usually on it 7-10 hours per day. The screen is bright and the media player controls are convenient.

The only problems I have had are on the touch pad and video card. I do not use a mouse, only the touch pad. Fortunately I purchased the 3 year In-Home warranty because I have already had the touchpad replaced twice and the mother board replaced once. I seem to wear out the left enter key below the touchpad but the entire board has to be replaced. I also lost my WSVGA capability due to a known NVidia 8600GT card problem. Since it is integrated into the motherboard, again the entire board had to be replaced. However, Dell did not hesitate to replace any of the components and sent a technician to my home within 24 hours. This may sound serious but it was repaired quickly and easily and my overall satisfaction with the laptop outweighs any inconvenience.

I have the six cell Dell XPS M1530, Intel core 2duo, cpu8100@2.10Ghz
4GB Ram, Nvidia Geforce 8400Gs, 320GB HD, 2.0 web cam I dont used the battery that much, but this labtop is one of the best I seen, got it Dec 31 2008, price was $1026. with military discount. I am a comsumer and this is my review.

Sleek! This is a great laptop! Loaded with all the latest bells and whistles, cool form, even a sleeve to keep it in.

The Dell XPS M1530 is one of the few Dell computers that comes standard with 4 GB of memory. This amount of memory is rare in Dell computers, and any laptop that is not top of the line. The 250 GB hard drive that also comes standard allows you to store dozens of full length movies, hundreds of thousands of photos or your entire CD collection digitally in no time flat. You would be hard pressed to ever fill up your hard drive on this computer!

Another great thing about the Dell XPS M1530 is that it was made after Dell was making bad computers. Seriously, for a while Dell computers were known for being extremely low quality. However, Dell changed its mind and made a strategic change to be design first. This allowed them to come out with XPS models like the XPS M1530 that changed the features of Dell computers forever.

One of the major downsides of the Dell XPS M1530 is that it is loaded up with Windows Vista Premium. While this operating system may work better on this computer it still may be somewhat sluggish. Vista is not known for being extremely user friendly. You may want to put another operating system on the computer, or use the new Windows 7 product that is coming out on the market.

Another advantage to the Dell XPS M1530 is that it is lighter than many 15 inch laptops. Weighing in at just over 6 pounds, you can carry it around easily enough. Most 15 inch laptops are quite heavy, usually around 8 pounds or more.

The price range on the Dell XPS M1530 does differ depending upon the options that you select. The top of the line model with the fastest dual core Intel processor, with 4 GB of memory and other options is around $2,000. However, if you want to spend a little less you can get a basic version of the same machine for around $999 or possibly less if it is on sale.

The Dell XPS M1530 is a great 15 inch laptop for people who are looking for a work horse that has fast processing power and is able to get the job done. Consider it when you are purchasing your next computer.

The Toshiba Qosmio F50 is an amazing computer that offers different features that many people, gamers in particular are looking for. If you are a gamer and want to get into a notebook for a low price, the F50 model is just the type of computer that you need to be looking at.

The F50 model is one of the few models that is designed with the Vibe design elements. These design elements allow someone to feel as if they are really getting a nice laptop. Very few laptop models are given these special vibe elements. While the F50 can brag lots of specs, it can not brag on its size. It is a little bit heavier, and also is not as thin as many other computers.

One of the coolest things about owning the Toshiba Qosmio F50 is that it has one of the most unique boot up shows. Various white lights will pop up on the screen and allow you to feel as if you are floating through the process. The keyboard that is featured with the F50 is quite nice. However, there are two problems with it. First off, it is difficult to see what you are typing and it is more difficult to keep away fingerprints from it.

Some of the best things about this system are that it is meant to be a gaming and multimedia system. The latest processor, video card and sound cards are included to make sure you have some of the best experience. However, the design of the exterior of the computer does detract from it and make the Toshiba Qosmio F50 a little bit more difficult to use.

One of the biggest problems with Toshiba laptops in general, and the Toshiba Qosmio F50 as well is the time that it takes for it to boot up on the first time. It is pain painstakingly slow! However, after you boot up a few times, change some settings, remove unnecessary programs and do everything else in your power, you typically will be able to get everything to work out pretty well.

The heft weight of the power adapter, and sluggish battery time does not make this a very portable system. You will get around 1:45 minutes unplugged with high usage, and 2:30 with lower usage. Not really a leader in its class, but you can use it as a laptop if you have to.

The price of the Toshiba Qosmio F50 is palatable for people in all price ranges. It is on the higher end for entry laptops, lower end for gaming laptops and in the middle for multimedia systems.

The Toshiba Satellite A300 is a computer that looks quite promising on the surface. The real question will be whether or not it preforms under pressure. Let's take a look at the various features that are under the hood of the A300.

With a Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 15.4 WGXA HD display, 320 GB SATA hard drive, and 4 GB of memory this laptop will not let you down. It is not meant to be an ultra portable laptop, but rather a laptop that you can use a desktop replacement. No longer do you need to be sitting at a desktop to get the pure power and speed of a desktop, the Toshiba Satellite A300 will give you everything that you need.

The overall chassis design of the A300 is quite simple of the eyes. There are no shocking colors or anything like that. You simply have a computer that looks black, slick and clean. There is also no gloss finish for your computer to collect fingerprints with. The laptop is only six pounds in weight, making it one of the lighter powerhouse laptops to carry around. Another great feature about it is its smaller size. It is not all that thick or long for a laptop, something that allows more people to use it in different situations.

The default power adapted that comes with the Toshiba Satellite A300 could be much better. The power adapter itself weighs in at nearly 1.5 pounds. However, you can always buy a compatible power adapter that costs much less down the road. The keyboard of the A300 is a little bit more slippery than you might imagine. IT is full size, and is quite easy to type on other that the small slippage issue. One of the biggest issues that people reported with their use of this laptop was the inital boot time being so slow. This is typically only the first time. After the first boot up, people are able to zip right along and get everything they need done.

Unlike other computer companies, Toshiba does a pretty decent job at keeping their laptops clear from junkware. There are programs that are utilities for your computer, but no games or useless programs. There is a trial of Norton 360, which can be useful for those who have not found another anti-virus program. After you have, make sure to uninstall Norton 360 as it is a major resource hog. Even a computer as powerful as the Toshiba Satellite A300 will not be able to keep running at full speed.

Depending on what options you get with your A300 you may find it for as cheap as $499 or as much as $999. It depends upon how much memory, hard drive space and other specifics. The Toshiba Satellite A300 is a overall decent computer for those looking for a great desktop replacement.
